Buyer Pays $195,000 for Rare Pokemon card

It’s impressive that after so many years, there are still people playing Pokemon and collect the cards. While a regular pack of booster cards will cost you about $5 in stores, someone paid much, much more than that for a single rare card recently.

The card in question is known as the Pikachu illustrator and was released in 1998. Only winners of the competition were given the card. There was a maximum of 39 copies of the car released via a contest from Corocoro Comics reports Nintendo Life.

In the January 19998 issue, three 1st place contest winners were given the card, and another 20 second place winners got a copy of the card. It’s unclear how many emails have survived, but it is widely considered the rarest of Pokemon cards.

There are many counterfeit copies out there, and the one sold for $195,000 is one of only 10 PSA certified copies known to exist. That is a lot of money for a Pokemon card that doesn’t do anything for the game; it’s said to confirm that the winner of the card was recognized for their artwork.
