ATI’s profit up, but Intel threatens

By

GRAPHICS FIRM ATI turned in net profits of $63.7 million for its first financial quarter, up 34 per cent from the same period last year.

The increase in net profit was matched by its revenues, which rose by 31 per cent to $613.9 million year on year.

But shortage of some components meant that its revenues weren’t as high for the quarter as some had hoped.

While its desktop and notebook turnover rose around 20 per cent from the year before, the firm said that integrated chips from Intel represented a formidable challenge to growth.

In fact, it appears that sales of ATI chips for consoles and other consumer products is the real growth area for the Canadian firm, and revenues from these will be greater than for the PC parts.”
