Apple Patent App Tips the Return of Touch ID

By

When Apple ditched the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, it didn’t want to do so it seems. Apple went with Face ID originally when its plans for an in-screen fingerprint reader fell through. Fast forward a couple of device generations and Android devices are coming out left and right with in-display fingerprint readers.

A new Apple patent application has turned up that was filed over a year ago. This patent outlines a new in-screen fingerprint reader and the return of Touch ID for Apple devices reports Forbes. Face ID has its flaws and for many having to hold their device up to their face isn’t convenient.

The return of Touch ID means that you can use your finger to unlock your iPhone, but the more powerful security option will be to use both. The security-conscious will appreciate being able to use both their face and fingerprint to unlock their device.

Word is that the art in the patent app uses a device that looks like the iPhone 6. You can bet the tech will return in a much sleeker design. If Apple wants to keep fans happy, it will need to ditch the notch and go with a pinhole camera at least.
