Apple iPhone 4 Dropped From Skydiver’s Pocket

Jarrod McKinney’s iPhone 4 — a notoriously fragile device — cracked when his 2-year-old knocked it off a bathroom shelf. “I was like, ‘Man! That’s all it takes to crack the glass?’ ” he said. So it’s easy to see why McKinney, a 37-year-old in Minnesota, would be “just absolutely shocked” when that same phone survived a fall from his pocket — while he was skydiving from 13,500 feet. He found the gadget, its glass surfaces shattered, on top of a building about a half-mile away from where he landed with his parachute.

On July 8th, my wife decided to do a tandem at Westside Skydivers in Winsted Minnesota. As we were getting ready to exit, I took off my camera helmet and left it in the plane since the camera was useless, and stuffed my phone into my pocket which had a zipper, and velcro. In my haste, I did not zip the pocket, thinking the velcro would be sufficient, and exited the aircraft. As unbelievable as it sounds, my phone had fallen 13,500 ft, and was still sending out a signal. According to my iPad, it was less than 1/4 mile away, and laying on top of a factory roof. I didn’t think there was anyway that the app could be that accurate, but low and behold, it was right where my iPad said it was, and it was still working!!! 13,500ft, 120mhp, to a steel roof, and still alive!!
