Another Day, Another Fortnite Dance Suit

Epic Games is making huge money with its Fortnite game, and a bunch of people are trying to get part of that fortune by claiming Epic has ripped off their dances. Several people have sued Epic over dance moves in the game known as emotes. Most recently a rapper called BlocBoy JB sued Epic.

Two former Maryland basketball players are now suing Epic alleging that Fortnite stole their dance moves. Jared Nickens and Jaylen Brantley claim that Epic Games is unfairly profiting from the “Running Man Challenge” dance the duo popularized on social media and TV.

The two men made an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show in 2016 to perform the dance. So far none of the suits against Epic by people claiming to own rights to dances has panned out in court.

US law says that no one can own a dance step or a simple dance routine. Dance steps are building blocks of free expression according to Epic. The two men are seeking over $5 million in damages.
