Mad Catz Shuts Down – Bankruptcy & Liquidation

By

We have learned that Mad Catz ceased operations on March 30, 2017, and filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 7 of U.S. Bankruptcy laws to initiate an orderly liquidation of its assets. All directors and officers of company have resigned and PricewaterhouseCoopers has been appointed as trustee of company’s estate. This ends the long financial struggles of the gaming peripheral maker Mad Catz and is the end nearly three decades in the PC, console and mobile gaming markets. Logitech purchased the Saitek brand from Mad Catz for $13 million in cash back in 2016, so we know that brand will live while the future of the others remains uncertain.

Most PC gamers will remember Mad Catz for their RAT series of gaming mice that were built from the ground up to be the best mice for those long marathon gaming sessions. The end result was a series full of gaming mice that looked unlike anything else on the market. I still remember writing the news post for the Mad Catz Cyborg R.A.T.9 Wireless Gaming Mouse and remembering house futuristic that $150 gaming mouse was back in 2010. Mad Catz really did have some unique and innovative designs and they will be missed by PC Gamers!

Sadly, the demise of Mad Catz doesn’t come as a shock as we’ve been writing about issues they have been facing for months now. The brand did well in the 1990’s and 2000’s, but the 2010’s proved to be too tough for the peripheral maker and some bad business moves didn’t help.
