FAA Confirms Computer Glitch Delaying Flights
This is a developing story just hitting the newswires. If you are flying today, be ready for delays or even cancellations if things escalate.
***UPDATE*** The FAA is claiming the problem has been remedied but delays may still be prevalent as Airlines try to play catch-up
A computer glitch is causing flights to be delayed nationwide Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed.
The problems are with retrieving flight plans from FAA computer systems, a spokeswoman said.
“We are having a problem processing flight plan information,” the FAA’s Kathleen Bergen explained in a prepared statement. “We are investigating the cause of the problem. We are processing flight plans manually and expect some delays.”
The technical difficulties weren’t affecting air traffic control’s systems, she said.
Controllers “have radio coverage and communications with planes,” according to Bergen.
The problems were first reported Thursday morning out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.
