GPU shortage expected to last through 1Q10

A shortage of 55nm-made GPUs is expected to last through the first quarter of 2010, as both AMD and Nvidia are focusing their attention toward DirectX 11-based 40nm-made GPUs, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report citing sources from the retail channel.

Since Nvidia plans to speed up adoption rate of its next generation GPUs after the launch of Windows 7, the company currently does not plan to increase its GT200 series GPU supply, as it wishes to avoid surplus inventory in the future, added the paper.
