Worldwide PC processor market rebounds in 2Q09, says IDC

Worldwide PC processor shipments in the second quarter of 2009 rose notably, according to new data from IDC. While the increase was unusually positive for the second quarter of a year, IDC’s said it analysis of the results indicated that Intel and OEM inventory refreshes drove the performance, and not the return of significant end demand for PCs.

In the second quarter of 2009, worldwide PC processor shipments rose 10.1% on quarter, compared to the drop of 10.9% from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009. Unit shipments declined 7% on year. Market revenues increased 7.9% from the first quarter of 2009 to the second, compared to drop of 11% from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009. Second quarter revenues declined 15.3% compared to the same quarter in 2008. Intel’s overall PC processor shipments increased 12.5% from the first quarter of 2009 to the second. AMD’s overall PC processor shipments increased 1.8% in the same period.
