Intel and TSMC to make ‘strategic announcement’ on GPUs
Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are expected to hold a joint press conference on Monday in the US to make a “strategic announcement.” TSMC has confirmed the “stratetgic announcement” will be made at the press conference at Intel’s headquarters on March 2, with high-level executives from both companies attending.
The executives will include: Anand Chandrasekher, manager of Intel’s ultra mobility group; Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of Intel’s sales and marketing group; Rick Tsai, TSMC CEO; and Jason Chen, vice president of TSMC, according to the world number-one pure play foundry. But TSMC declined to reveal further details. Some industry sources have speculated that the announcement is likely to be about graphics process unit (GPU) business, as TSMC has strong and stable process technology for GPU manufacturing, judging from its experience cooperating with AMD and Nvidia. The sources believe that Intel will outsource its GPUs or chipsets to TSMC in order to save costs and diversify risks.
