USB 3.0 Slower Than Expected
By
For a while, USB lagged behind Firewire in data transfer rates. USB 2.0 came along and mostly evened the playing field. Finally, USB 3.0 is on the horizon and promises to raise the bar even further but maybe not as much as previously thought.
USB 3.0 may promise data transfer speeds of up to 5000 Mb/s (625 MB/s) but such levels will not be possible, at least not in initial devices. When USB 3.0 hardware will become available in late 2009 or early 2010, users will have to settle for about one fourth of the theoretical maximum bandwidth, TG Daily learned.
