Acer expects to grab 50% share of 2009 netbook market
Although the global economy is showing signs of weakening, Acer has said it is not feeling much impact and expects total PC shipments in 2008 to surpass 30 million units. The company is targeting a goal of 36-39 million units in 2009, according to company chairman JT Wang, adding that the company’s notebook shipments are likely to grow 25-35%. As for netbooks, Acer shipped around 2.4 million units in the third quarter and with demand for the Aspire one climbing in the US market, the company’s shipment in 2008 will reach or surpass its goal of 5-6 million units, according to Gianfranco Lanci, the company president.
Lanci also added that in 2009, the global netbook market scale will expand to 30-35 million units, with Acer to grab a 40-50% share, equivalent to shipments of around 12-15 million units. Acer has announced results for the third quarter this year with consolidated revenues of NT$159.2 billion (US$5 billion), representing 31% on-year growth. Operating income was US$145 million after expensing employee bonuses and remuneration. Net profit after tax was US$95 million and EPS was NT$1.22.
