After 10 Years of LAN Gaming the CPL Ceases Operations

By

It seems like yesterday that I was down in Dallas for the Winter CPL back in 2004, but that was back when things were going good in the gaming industry. I guess I’ll have to look at old pictures of past CPL events as the CPL is no longer hosting events. Remember back in 2006 the canceled the CPL World Tour, but things turned around for them. Then again back in 2006 I wrote a little editorial about how LAN gaming was headed in the wrong direction and they two groups I highlighted (WSVG and CPL) are both gone now. Makes you think for a second…

Effective immediately, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) will cease operations. Therefore, all CPL events currently scheduled for 2008 are hereby canceled. The CPL was launched in June 1997 with the pioneering mission of promoting and sanctioning video game competitions as a professional sport. For ten years the CPL events experienced increased growth – commencing with a small LAN event in Dallas, Texas, and culminating in world-class competitions across five continents.
