ECS changes strategy to cut into higher-end motherboard market
Elitegroup Computer System (ECS) will change its motherboard strategy this year to focus on more higher-end products, according to sources at motherboard makers. Due to limited growth in the entry-level market, ECS has recently changed some of its PCB and port layouts to suit higher-end markets while also adding unique functions to its motherboards. With the changes, the company expects to grab a modest share in the mid-range and high-end markets.
Some channel vendors think that if ECS is serious about cutting into the higher-end market it will need to completely change its brand image to have a chance of competing with the other first-tier motherboard makers. However, other vendors pointed out that ECS used to be the leading motherboard maker, and so if the company is aggressive over its R&D and management it could be possible for the company to win back its position in the high-end market.
