Demand for Nvidia G80 chips weak? Could it Be?
Nvidia’s launch of its DirectX 10-compliant GeForce 8800 GPU (codenamed G80) earlier this month seems to have failed to significantly stir up demand for high-end graphics cards, although the new chips took a lead in 3D computing processing, according to sources at Taiwan-based graphics card makers.
Since the G80 is preliminarily targeting the high-end sector, the sources pointed out that Nvidia’s forthcoming G84 and G86 GPUs for the entry-level and mid-range segments are likely to play a key role in the GPU market, with the two new GPUs expected to debut in the first quarter of 2007. Although details of the G84 and G86 are still not available, Nvidia has completed the roadmap for the two chips, with local graphics card makers likely to receive product samples in January or February of next year, the sources stated.
