PS5 Could be in Production Soon says TSMC

There has been talk about the next Sony game console of late with rumors suggesting that the PS5 could land this year. There have also been rumors that claim the PS5 wont land until 2020 at the earliest. The question is which rumor is right?

A hardware manufacturer called Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company or TSMC has indicated that the chips that many believe will be used in the PS5 are in production now. These chips are said to be 7nm units and while TSMC has stopped short of saying these chips are specifically for the PS5, there are hints that this is the chip Sony will use.

TSMC has stated that those specific chips will be used mainly for gaming. “More than 50 products tape-outs have been planned by end of this year from applications across mobile, server CPU, network processor, gaming, GPU, PGA, cryptocurrency, automotive and AI,” said TMCS president C.C. Wei, speaking with AdandTech. “Our 7nm is already in volume production.”

Comicbook.com reports that most believe it’s too soon for a console reveal, but these chips going into production could mean that dev units will start going out to studios soon. With E3 only weeks away, perhaps we will learn more at the show.
