Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime Says Don’t Overbid for a Super NES Classic Edition

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime has promised that Nintendo is significantly ramping up production of the Super NES Classic Edition to meet demand. The console has been hard to find leading many people to head to eBay where scalpers are marking the console up well over the $79.99 retail price.

Fils-Aime says, “I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites. You shouldn’t [have to] pay more than $79.99.” Nintendo was unable to meet the booming demand that was there for the last retro console it offered, the NES Classic Edition.

That means that many of the people who wanted one ended up paying well over retail via scalpers or being unable to find one before the console was cancelled. The Nintendo exec also notes that the reason for the $79.99 price from Nintendo was to keep the price from exceeding the price for current Nintendo offerings like the 3DS reports Ars Technica.

Nintendo has said it will produce lots more Super NES Classic editions than it did the past console, but it hasn’t committed to making the console past the end of 2017. That means there may well be people who don’t get their hands on one despite Nintendo’s promises of more production.
