Nintendo Predicts 13M Switch Consoles Sold

By

Nintendo has talked up its numbers for the final quarter of its fiscal 2016 sales year and among the talk of money made and lost is details of just how many Switch consoles have been sold. Nintendo says that after the Switch launched on March 3, it sold 2.74 million Switch consoles for the remainder of that month.

Nintendo had predicted 2 million would sell for March so it handily beat its own prediction. Nintendo has forecast sales of another 10 million Switch consoles for the current fiscal year meaning it expects to have sold about 13 million consoles by the end of April. The rub for Nintendo and gamers is that the Switch is still hard to find.

That poor availability is certainly a hindrance on the sales numbers for the console and Nintendo could have sold more had their been better availability. The poor availability does suggest that sales of the Switch are higher than Apple expected. One interesting tidbit is that the Wii U only sold 760k units between April 2016 and March 2017.

Nintendo’s numbers were decent with reported revenue of $4.39 billion and operating profit of $264 million for fiscal 2016 reports The Verge. Those numbers represent revenue down 3% from the previous fiscal year and operating profit down 11%. Nintendo is expecting big things with its next fiscal year. Predictions point to 60 billion yen in operating profit and 750 billion yen in revenue.
