NVIDIA SHIELD Pro Andoid TVs Being Replaced Over Pixilation and Storage Drive Issues

SHIELD Pro 500GB Android TV

After month NVIDIA SHIELD Pro Android TV users complained about pixelated Google recommendations and general slowdown issues it appears that NVIDIA is offering a replacement for customers still having issues after upgrade 1.4. NVIDIA Customer Care quietly posted up a Question and Answer post on the GeForce Community forums on September 6th, 2015 that notes some models will need to be RMA’d. It appears that less than 1% of NVIDIA SHIELD Pro Android TV models are needing to be replaced and a model is only needing to be replaced if it is experiencing one of the two problems:

  1. Fastboot menu appears during Upgrade 1.4 (even if system recovers after a system reboot you should get a replacement).
  2. Severe and persistent pixilation in all tiles of the top row of the Android TV home screen (text in tiles will be unreadable and does not become clear after a few seconds).

If your unit is experiencing any of these issues you should contact NVIDIA Customer Care at a Question and Answer post for a replacement straight away and they’ll begin the RMA process for you. Since the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV was officially released in USA and Canada, you’ll need to please provide a USA address so that NVIDIA can process RMA. If you bought one in America and had it shipped to a different country you’ll need to send it back to someone in the United States or Canada to do the RMA for you.

GeForce Community Memory Sikclown had this to say about the NVIDIA SHIELD Pro Android TV performance issues he’s experienced:

“More and more I have been seeing slugishness when launching apps, stutters during games, Google Play Music is nearly unusable for long stretches, and Google Recommendations are all Pixelated. Actually I know my Pro is about to #$#t the bed when Recommendations get pixelated. I have all updates installed, I have cleared caches, removed USB Drive and SD card, and now I am factory resetting. Other Pro owners are reporting the same behavior. My 16GB Shield is set up EXACTLY to the T as my Pro is and it runs circles around the pro. The only differences between the two are My 16GB version has all the Apps on the SD card and my Pro has them all on internal. I am very close to throwing my Pro through the window.”

An example of the pixelated Google Recommendations can be seen below. For those who are curious, some pixelation of the home menu when things are loading is to be expected, but should go away within seconds. The units that are faulty stay that way for minutes if not hours at a time.
