Gaming: Shadowbane Now Free To Play
Online role playing game Shadowbane will be free to play according to its publisher Ubisoft. The game charges $12.99 a month and has been running since March 2003. Lately it has been losing players to World of WarCraft, EverQuest, and Star Wars Galaxies. Can you say pwned? I’m not to sure that in game advertising is a great way to replace the subscriptions though.
While the idea of free gameplay might get the game a few more players, it is not clear how Ubisoft will make money out of running the operation. According to Gamasutra, the outfit will be making an announcement on its cunning plan soon. A number of the other online roleplaying games are also looking at dumping the subscription models, but since their alternatives have involved payments in one form or another there has been little in the way of change. In game advertising is also being considered by some Game Publishers.
