The 28th edition of the TOP500 List of World’s Fastest Supercomputers was released on November 14 at the SC2006 conference and the United States still has the number one spot.

The US never lost its domination in the global rankings since 1993, and now, it has 308 systems in the list, up from 299 in June. The UK and Japan tied in the race for second place, with 30 machines each. Germany’s count rose from 17 to 19 systems, and outpaced China to grab the 4th place position in the number of supercomputers. France was 6th with 12 systems, followed by India (10), Canada and Italy (both with eight). Surprisingly, Spain jumped from 22nd (one system) in June to 10th, and now has seven machines in the TOP500 list, one of which is the most powerful European supercomputer (5th in the world at 62.6 TFLOPS) installed at the Barcelona Supercomputer Center.
