The $499 Sony PlayStation Leaves People Shocked At E3 2006

Aiming to hang on to the hard-core gamers who have propelled Sony to the top of the $25 billion video game industry, the company gave tantalizing demonstrations of the games planned for its upcoming PlayStation 3 on Monday as the industry’s biggest trade show started in Los Angeles.

Sony’s announcement Monday kicked off the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the game industry’s biggest trade show with an expected 70,000 in attendance, with its previews of games intended to build consumer appetite for its PlayStation 3. Sony also announced that the PlayStation 3 would launch in Nov. 17 in North America, and set a price of $499 for a system with a 20-gigabyte hard-disk drive, or $599 for a version with a 26-gigabyte hard disk.
