Storage Visions 2014: Samsung 850 SSD Series Coming This Summer

By

Today at Storage Visions in Las Vegas, we got a chance to catch up with Samsung to see what they are setting their sights on and what they think the market will do. Samsung started off by mentioning that they opened up a new multi-billion dollar plant in China for NAND manufacturing recently, and with this, they expect some good things to come. Samsung did not have any price drops on their products last year, but this year will likely change that trend thanks to this plant. Samsung expects NAND prices to reduce and in turn means less expensive products for consumers.

With Samsungs trend for updating their products every year, we should expect to see updates to the Samsung 840 SSD Series, meaning that the Samsung 850 SSD series is in the works. This series will likely consist of the 850 Pro and 850 EVO drives which that will be released in the middle of 2014 (June/July). There should also be an external SSD storage solution down the road, but this will likely hit a different type of consumer because of the sheer cost vs. a traditional external drive. Unfortunately there are no prototypes available for us to see at this time.

Samsung does not have their sights on any of the new SATA Express tech, as theyre trying to feel out the market before investing into it. Its too new and not widely adopted yet that they want to focus on other things at this time. They said when the market begins to pick up, youll be sure to find their product amongst their competitors. They do have some SATA Express products out on the market, but these are proprietary products for certain manufacturers, such as Apple.

2014 is definitely another year to keep Samsung in your eyes!
