Spotify Now Has 50M Paying Subscribers

By

When it comes to streaming music services, Spotify is the most popular service out there. Some subscriber numbers have turned up that shed a bit of light on how well the company is doing. According to the numbers it has 50 million paid subscribers. The last time numbers were offered was back in September of last year and it had 40 million subscribers at the time.

That means in the last six months Spotify has added 50 million paid subscribers to its books. We have no idea of the total number of subscribers Spotify has, the company hasn’t reported on the number of subscribers to its free ad-supported tier.

It would be a safe bet that there are many more free subscribers than paid. The 50 million paying subscribers metric would give Spotify a massive lead on Apple Music said to have about 20 million paying members. According to Nielsen, 431 billion songs were streamed last year from subscribers using on-demand services.

Spotify subscriptions vary in cost depending on what tier the subscriber chooses. Students pay $4.99 monthly, a standard subscription is $9.99 monthly, and a family of up to six people can get music for $14.99 monthly. Apple Music is priced exactly the same. Some subscribers started receiving invites to a Hi-Fi lossless version of Spotify this week.
