Sony Sneakily Increases Price of PlayStation Plus Subscription Fee

By

Sony E3 2015Earlier today, or at least noticed today, Sony edited a PlayStation blog post originally dated for July 27th to announce higher PlayStation Plus subscription fees. PlayStation Plus is required for PlayStation 4 accounts to play most online multiplayer games.

“Starting on September 22, 2016, prices for PlayStation Plus memberships will change to $59.99 USD/ $69.99 CAD for twelve months and $24.99 USD/$29.99 CAD for three months. The monthly plan will change to $11.99 CAD in Canada, and remain $9.99 USD in the U.S. If you are a current member, the new prices will take effect if your membership renews on or after this date.”

The underhanded means by which Sony made this announcement at least suggests that even they know the price hike would be poorly received which is what is happening. Upset users have voiced criticisms directly at the price hike and indirectly by attacking the unimpressive quality of service including server problems and the disappointing loyalty program in the form of “free” indie games distributed monthly.
