SNES Classic Edition Has a Rewind Feature

By

We all know that the retro game consoles that Nintendo produces are incredibly popular with gamers. The NES Classic sold out almost as fast as they consoles were available and the new SNES Classic edition will do the same. The gamers over at Kotaku got to spend half an hour playing the new game console and found that despite knowing it could put an image of a big turd on the box and still sell all the consoles, Nintendo actually added some nice new features to the SNES Classic.

The coolest new feature is a rewind system that is said to allow you to jump back in time when you make a mistake in a game. In the original days of the SNES, and any other Nintendo consoles, messing up and dying in a game often meant you went back to the start of the level or mission and tried it all again. This was incredibly frustrating when it was hard to get to that point. There were no game saves back in the day.

Each game has four Suspend Point slots and when you press the reset button you can save your place in the game. That feature was available in the NES Classic, but in the SNES Classic implementation when you load that save game you can load it with Rewind mode on and that allows you to jump back in a few minutes before you messed up last time. You can move back and forth in that rewind window and join the game wherever you like. You do have to hit the reset button on the console to use the feature.

SNES Classic comes with 21 games and they are quite the mix of titles including the much anticipated StarFox 2 that was never released before. The games can be displayed in 4:3 mode and you can choose what fills in the extra screen space of modern TVs from wood, to color changing areas, to black bars. Nintendo still promises “significantly more” SNES Classics so perhaps scalpers won’t be the only place to find one consistently this time around. The SNES Classic launches on September 29 and will sell for $79.99.
