Samsung Set to Unveil Stretchable AMOLED

By

Samsung is set to show off a new display this week at an annual event called Display Week. The display that Samsung will be showing off is said to be the world’s first stretchable OLED screen. The device Samsung will be showing off is a 9.1-inch panel that is able to bend 0.47-inches in either direction while retaining high-resolution reports PhoneArena.

I can only imagine that a display that is able to bend nearly half an inch in either direction should mean a screen that is much more resistant to cracking when dropped. Samsung says that the display can be curved, bent, and rolled on all sides. This might mean a Galaxy Edge device with larger bends in the future.

The bendable display has applications outside of mobile devices as well with Samsung expected to use it in wearable devices, automotive applications, AI, and IoT devices. There is no word on when a production version of this screen might make its way into a product.

There are other products that will be at the show that are closer to launch. One of the screens is a 3D OLED that needs no glasses. I’m not sure anyone really wants a 3D screen anymore, the tech has certainly fallen by the wayside. That 3D panel is a 5.09-inch unit that could be useful in VR applications.

Another Samsung screen at the show is a small 1.96-inch UHD LCD with 3840 x 2160 resolution and a pixel density of 2250 ppi. That screen is expected to find the most use inside AR/VR headsets.
