Report Claims Apple Bought 70M OLED Screens from Samsung

So will the iPhone 8 or won’t the iPhone 8 get that curved OLED screen that has been rumored for a while? Last month a rumor surfaced claiming that the iPhone 8 might not get a curved OLED screen after all, the assumption there was that the iPhone 8 would use a flat OLED screen disappointing fans looking forward to a new design.

Only a few days later another rumor surfaced that claimed the iPhone 8 would get curves on its screen, but those curves would be very slight and would how no data on the curved edges as the Galaxy S7 Edge does. Today another rumor is making the rounds that has to do with the screen of the iPhone 8.

This time out the rumor comes from the Nikkei Asian Review, as reported by Mashable. The rumor claims that sources in the Apple supply chain have stated that Apple purchased 70 million OLED screens from Samsung. The source also claims that the screen for at least one version of the upcoming iPhone models will be curved in some way.

Odds are that curve will be slight according to the past rumors. Only the premium version, being called the iPhone 8, will have that OLED screen and the other two versions will have standard screens. That fancier iPhone will also sell for more money than past iPhone models sold for. With an order of 70 million screens, Apple clearly plans to sell a lot of its high-end iPhone model despite the rumored price of $1,000 or more.

Nikkei also cites a few other rumors from industry sources including the fact that all three iPhone models will feature wireless charging. All three will also be waterproof according to the publication. Nikkei also says that at least one model will have 3D sensors and facial recognition. That latter model will presumably be the iPhone 8 as it has long been rumored to lose the home button and TouchID functionality, but gain facial recognition.
