Seagate Momentus 7200.2 Hard Drives
The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 laptop hard drive series has been on the market for a long time now and as a result it is no longer the latest and greatest laptop hard drive, but these drives make up for that with their low price point. The Momentus 7200.2 hard drives are ideal for mainstream and performance-class laptops, small form factor PCs and many other small or mobile environments where performance and size are critical. Since many older laptops featured drives under 60GB many users are finding themselves running out of space. The good news is that you don't have to spend a ton of money to get more storage space as a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB notebook hard drive can be purchased online for just $54.99 plus shipping.
The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 laptop hard drive is a 2.5-inch drive that uses a SATA NCQ interface. The drive operates at 7200 RPM and features 16MB of cache, which make it ideal for those looking for more performance out a laptop.

The back of this 2.5" notebook hard drive gives a better look at the SATA power connector and the SATA NCQ interface. There is a jumper just to the left of the SATA data connection that enables the drives 3Gb/s speeds. With the jumper in place the speed it limited at 1.5Gb/s, and with it removed the full potential of the drive is unlocked.
Now that we know the basics on the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB hard drive let's move on to the benchmarks!
HD Tach v184.108.40.206
HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.
Benchmark Results: The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB Notebook hard drive has an advertised speed rating of 59 MBps (internal). HD Tach 220.127.116.11 found that the average read speed was 54.6MBps and the averge write speed was 47.8MBps. The random access time of the drive was 14.7ms, which isn't too bad for a notebook. The burst speed of 129.0MBps seemed a little lacking, but remember the jumper is installed on the drive making it operate as a SATA 1.5 device.
HD Tune v3.50
HD Tune Pro 3.50 is an extended version of HD Tune which includes many new features such as: write benchmark, secure erasing, AAM setting, folder usage view, disk monitor, command line parameters and file benchmark.
Benchmark Results: The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB Notebook hard drive did roughly the same in HD Tune, which means our benchmark numbers should be fairly accurate. The average read speed was 51.4MBps and the average write speed was found to be 48.5MBps. The access time averaged between 15.2 to 15.8 ms with the a burst speed of 78 to 105 MBps. The CPU utilization was the same on both benchmarks; 0.8%.
64MB File Test
Benchmark Results: Running the built-in file benchmark test in HD Tune showed once again just how the drive performance with various file sizes.
SiSoftware Sandra 2009 SP3
SiSoftware Sandra (the System ANalyser, Diagnostic and Reporting Assistant) is an information & diagnostic utility. Sandra provides most of the information (including undocumented) you need to know about your hardware, software and other devices whether hardware or software. In order to test the hard drive SiSoftware Sandra 2009 SP3 was used as part of the test suite. The graphical results that Sandra gives you after the test is completed nicely shows drives perform over time and where at on the drive the performance is seen.
Benchmark Results: In the read performance test that is used in SANDRA 2009 SP3, the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB Notebook hard drive had a read speed of 51.988MBps and a write speed of 45.052MBps.
CrystalDiskMark is a small HDD benchmark utility for your hard drive that enable you to rapidly measure sequential and random read/write speeds.
Benchmark Results: The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB Notebook hard drive did very well in CrystalMark 2.2 and performed the best in the sequential writes. CrystalMark 2.2 was run with a 50MB and a 100MB file size due to requests from our readers. The drive had a peak read speed of 60MBps and a write speed of 49MBps.
ATTO Disk Benchmark v2.34
ATTO is one of the oldest hard drive benchmarks that is still used today. ATTO measures transfers across a specific volume length. It measures raw transfer rates for both reads and writes and places the data into graphs that you can easily interpret. The test was run with the default runs of 0.5kb through 8192kb transfer sizes with the total length being 256mb.
Benchmark Results: The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB hard drive seemed to hit 48MBPs on both the read and write tests.
Benchmark Results: With the test settings changed to I/O Comparison, the results were still roughly the same.
Final Thoughts and Conclusions
The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 laptop hard drive is not anything new, but I wanted to show our readers that good performance can be had without spending a ton of money. To be honest Seagate didn't provide this review sample as this was something I picked up on my own. If you find yourself with a notebook that is 2-3 years old that is currently running out of storage space a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 series laptop hard drive might be right for you. They are priced to move and with the uncertainty in the economy they offer great price versus performance value.
I personally replaced an older Fujitsu MHV2060BH 60GB 5400RPM SATA 2.5" hard drive in my laptop that had an average read speed in HD Tune of 32MBps. By moving to the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB Hard Drive my storage space more than tripled and performance went up 59% as the average read speed it now 51MBps. Not a bad deal considering one of these drives can be purchased online for just $54.99 plus shipping. It is hard to believe that when this drive was released in 2007 that it retailed for over $200! At $0.27 per GB you really can't complain that the price is too high. The drive seems a little louder when the system is first powered on and the drive spins up, but during normal operation I can't hear a difference from the old one. The battery life of my notebook also doesn't seem to be impacted as a significant difference was not see when I looked into that. If you are looking to expand your notebooks storage capacity, give the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB hard drive a look.
Legit Bottom Line: The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB hard drive is widely available and offers solid performance with a great price tag!
