The Pokemon Go Water Festival Has Just Started

I don’t remember the last time I opened Pokemon Go. Like most players, the game’s content hasn’t really captivated us long enough to grow attached. Along with many Pokefans (including our parents), Pokemon Go caused quite the uproar with people getting chased through parks, server problems (not referring to the recent election), players walking off of cliffs, and the inability to get enough candy to evolve our Magikarp into a Gyarados. Perhaps this is about to change. Maybe not necessarily the current player base of Pokemon Go, rather the chance to evolve that Magikarp. Niantic, making the possible effort to bring players back to the game, has started up an event in Pokemon Go: the Water Festival. This will increase the spawn rate of a good number of water Pokemon including Squirtle, Totodile, and the aforementioned Magikarp.

In addition to the water Pokemon spawning in areas wherein you’d never find them in the real world, there is also an increase in the number of Lapras in areas where you would actually expect to see a Lapras: “when youre out exploring areas where Water-type Pokmon more commonly appear, youll have a greater chance to encounter several of the Water-type Pokmon originally discovered in the Johto region, and maybe you might even encounter Lapras.” Now, this is definitely unfair for players in continental regions who haven’t a pond in sight and this may be a reason it’s difficult to hold onto players. If you’re in the middle of nowhere and the nearest PokeStop is a Starbucks that’s a 30 minute drive away, chances are high that the player wouldn’t want to make the trip for a few Pokeballs and a potion. Regardless, for those of our friends too far from any body of water: fill up a vat or kiddy pool and hope a Lapras spawns. As excited as I am to finally get a Blastoise, it’s still rather upsetting to know that this game still seems to favor those of us who live near more populated areas.
