Oculus Rift Summer Sale Knocks About $200 Off

By

If you have been holding out on buying an Oculus Rift VR headset because of price, the new summer sale might have you reaching for your wallet. The summer sale sees the Oculus Rift and motion controller bundle sells for $399, which is almost a $200 discount off the normal price. This new pricing is for a limited time.

The Verge reports that Oculus VP of content Jason Rubin says that the sale is meant to lure gamers who “may have been sitting on the sidelines because of price.” One caveat is that the summer sale does not affect pricing on the individual products, if all you want is the Rift headset, that will cost you $499 and the Touch controllers alone are $99.

I can’t imagine why someone wouldn’t want to just buy the discounted bundle and I doubt anyone will (assuming they don’t just need the motion controllers). Some folks might also be thinking that the discounted pricing on the bundle is because a new version might be on the horizon. Rubin says, “Somebody who goes out and buys a Rift [on sale] is not going to find themselves with hardware thats outdated any time soon. The Rift is going to be driving a lot of enjoyment for people for many years.”

If you want to step into the world of VR gaming, you do need to keep in mind that the Oculus Rift headset isn’t all you need, you also need a gaming PC capable of running the headset. With the new lower specs required to operate the Rift, if you need to buy a new gaming PC that will add another $650 to the price tag. Rubin states, “The PC is very quickly not becoming the expensive part of the VR equation. And we want to make sure that the VR hardware itself isn’t an expensive part of the equation. So we’re headed toward mass-market pricing.”
