Napster offers 5 free tunes — Hopes to gain subscribers

By

Napster Inc. will offer some music free as part of an effort to drive more customers and advertisers to its Napster.com Web site. Doesn’t sound like a bad plan, but I hope it works. I’m not sure how many will bite the hook and sign up though.

Users will be able to listen to more than 2 million songs five times each at no cost, betting the free offering will lure more customers to its Web site and give the company a better chance of convincing them to sign up for its subscription service. Napster charges $9.95 and $14.95 a month for membership to its site, which gives access to music downloads and radio stations.
