The Xiaomi MiPad 7.9-inch 16GB tablet was launched today in Beijing for 1499 RMB ($240 USD or 175 Euro). The tablet is news worthy because it is the very first tablet to come to market that features NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 processor. The 7.9-inch display comes with a beefy 2,048 x 1,536 screen resolution with a pixel density of 326 ppi! The Tegra K1 comes equipped with a quad-core 2.2 GHz ARM Cortex A15 CPU, but the GPU is what makes the 2048×1536 screen resolution possible. The Tegra K1 features 192 CUDA cores and we are talking about cores based on the Kepler architecture! The NVIDIA Tegra K1 is the first mobile SoC that to utilize this architecture and many are hopeful that it will improve what one can expect when it comes to graphics performance on mobile devices.

Other notable features include 2GB LPDDR3 RAM, 16 or 64 GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for additonal storage. There is also an 8 MP rear camera, 5 MP front camera, 802.11ac Wireless with Bluetooth 4.0 and a 6,700 mAh battery in a chassis that weighs 360g. That chassis looks very similar to the iPad mini, so we doubt anyone will be complaining about looks. The thickness also isn’t bad at 8.5mm.The only kicker is that the MiPad runs on a version of Android called MIUI. from what we can tell is is basically Android 4.4.2 KitKat that has been modified to look like iOS7.

The Xiaomi MiPad will be available in China starting in June as an open beta. It will retail for around $240 (16 GB) and $270 (64 GB). We aren’t sure if it will be made available outside of China, but we certainly hope that Xiaomi will bring this table out in other regions.
