Mario Has Quit Plumbing Says New Bio

Mario has a profile over on the Nintendo page in Japan and according to that profile page, he has changed jobs reports Kotaku. Anyone around back in the arcade days will remember Mario from Donkey Kong where he smashed rolling barrels with a hammer. I always thought of him as a carpenter back in the day because of that game.

Then he turned up in Mario Bros and he was a plumber. In Mario Bros. he needed to be a plumber because he was zipping in and out of pipes warping around the game world. The new description by Nintendo is in Japanese, but the translation reads, “All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…”

It’s worth noting that when Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong, he wasn’t called Mario he was known as “Jumpman.” Mario becomes what his role dictates according to Miyamoto. The character may have changed jobs, but at least he still wears his iconic blue overalls.

“With (1983’s) Mario Bros., we brought in Luigi and a lot of the game was played underground so we made him to fit that setting and, we decided he could be a plumber,” Miyamoto previously told USA Today in a Q&A back in 2010. “The scenario dictates his role.”
