Intel Preparing Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition For Fourth-Quarter 2012
It Looks like Intel has a new processor in the works for their high-end desktop platform. The Core i7-3970X Extreme, will be Intel’s new flagship processor for socket 2011. It will of course be a 6-core Extreme Edition, which means it is fully unlocked and ready to overclock and has a base clock speed of 3.5 GHz, Turbo Boost cranks it up to 4.0 GHz. This chip is of course still based on the Sandy Bridge-E silicon and shares many of the same features with that of the i7-3960X it replaces. The one difference other than clock speed may be the thermal design power (TDP) which appears to be 150 watts up from the 130 watts of the i7-3960X. An exact price on the new CPU is unknown but it is expected that the i7-3960X will see a price drop with the i7-3970X taking the former processors price point.
