Devil’s Canyon might be all over the news today, but don’t forget about the new Intel Pentium G3258 Anniversary Edition Processor. This processor is based on the same dual-core, dual-threaded architecture as other 22nm Haswell processors, but is fully unlocked like a traditional K-SKU processor. When we reviewed the Intel Pentium G3220 Processor, that is $59.99 shipped, we found it to be a very capable processor. Our testing showed that it could hang with the much more expensive Intel Core i7-4770K processor in many game titles with a discrete graphics card at 1080P (1920×1080).

The Intel Pentium G3258 processor is designed for socket LGA1150 boards and runs with a base clock of 3.2GHz and has 3MB of L3 cache. The TDP on the Pentium G3258 is just 53 Watts, so pretty much any aftermarket CPU cooler will do the trick on the Pentium G3258 if you were planning on overclocking it to the hilt. The Pentium G3258 will be priced at $72 when bought in quantities of 1,000 processors and is expected to arrive on June 10th.

To take full advantage of the unlocked processor you’ll need an Intel Z series motherboard and with a little luck you might be able to get a chip that can hit a 4.0GHz overclock (40x100MHz). Devil’s Canyon has next generation polymer thermal interface material (NGPTIM) applied to improve cooling, but that is not used on the Intel Pentium G3258 processor. Traditional thermal interface material (TIM) is being used between the actual die and integrated heat spreader (IHS) on the Intel Pentium G3258 Anniversary Edition Processor.
