Andy Rubin Teases a Bezel-Free Phone

By

Andy Rubin, the co-founder of Android, sent out a Tweet yesterday morning of a hand grasping a sleek and bezel-free phone. Several sources claim the phone to be Essential’s (Andy Rubin’s new company) first smartphone in their lineup. In January, Rubin announced that he’d be starting up his own company and he’s given us a glimpse of what we can expect.

With the technological world moving away from more narrow and modern looking designs, it makes sense that the bezel would be the next to go when the thickness of phones has come to a point wherein we’d find little reason to make it thinner. Our televisions and monitors have gone from the size of ancient mastadons to the more modern borneo pygmy type of monitor. Along with the size of these tube displays dropping to the ultra-slim type of monitors, we started to notice the bezels narrowing down too. These innovations made their way into the realm of smart phones.

A bezel-free phone isn’t something that everyone goes for. Simply because a phone is bezel-free doesn’t mean it increases the quality in any way. Rather, we still have to look at the specs and performance of the smartphone. Otherwise, we’d be stuck with a pretty looking mini-brick. Regardless, it’s still something to be excited about. With Essential’s smartphone (seeming to gain more traction than Xiaomi’s bezel-free Mi Mix) sitting in the public’s eye, we can expect other smartphone manufacturers to jump onto the bandwagon.
