Android Is Now The Most Used Operating System Online

By

According to the web analytics company StatCounter there is a new number one when it comes to the most popular operating system on the internet and that would be Android. StatCounter tracks the data from 2.5 million websites and has discovered that Android accounts for a larger share of internet usage than Windows for the very first time. The crossover happened in March 2017 where Android had 37.93 percent of the usage versus 37.91 percent by Windows. The gap is tiny for now, but Android use shows no signs of slowing down as traditional PCs sales have been in decline and smartphone sales are rising across the globe.

OS Market Share Over 5 Years 2012-2017

Just 5 years ago Windows had over 80 percentof the worldwide market share when it came to Operating Systems online, but that number has been reduced by more than half in that amount of time. Android usage has gone from low single digit percentages up to nearly 38 percent in the same amount of time.

If you look at just desktop use, you’ll see that in March 2017 that 84.34% of desktop computers were running Windows, 11.68% were running OS X and then just 1.54% were using Linux.

Keep in mind that Android is based on Linux kernel, so maybe Linux is the real winner here? There is also some speculation around Google’s upcoming Fuchsia OS and that Google may not use the Linux kernel. From the looks of the code so far it appears to be built on Magenta and is very lightweight. No one knows what Google is exactly planning to do with Fuchsia, so we will just have to wait and see. You can see the Fuchsia code for yourself on GitHub.
