At the AMD Capsaicin and Cream event, today, Roy Taylor talked extensively about the future of VR, including delivering VR at 120 FPS with 16K resolution in the coming years. An important part of improving the VR experience, according to Mr. Taylor, is reducing the screendoor effect that is present with existing VR technology. By eliminating barriers between immersion, such as resolution and latency, a better, more immersive VR experience can be had. One technology to combat the screendooring issue, Asynchronous Reprojection technology has been developed for use with AMD cards along with Valve and HTC. This technology has been available on NVidia cards since late last year, so it is definitely good to see that AMD will finally be catching up to provide a smoother visual experience for VR users.

After Roy talked about Async Reprojection, a demo of Robo Recall, a VR-optimized game that takes advantage of AMD technology to provide a faster, smoother experience in VR than in a desktop counterpart. ROM Extraction, which is already available on SteamVR, was also show in demo form on AMD graphics technology. The VR demos looked great, with Robo Recall providing quite a bit of intrique. VR seems to be in limbo with the general gaming crowd and I think 2017 will be a telling year for the future of the technology. AMD definitely seems to have their eggs in the VR basket and invested quite a bit of time of their GDC conference going over VR technology.

So far, the VR demos have been the best part of the AMD Capsaicin and Cream event, with the earlier segments and demos a bit cringy.
