AMD Looking To Outsource Chipset Design To ASMedia

By

DIGITIMES is reporting that AMD is planning to outsource its PC chipset research and design (R&D) to ASMedia Technology, a subsidiary of ASUS, to save costs. DIGITIMES believes that the partnership between the two companies could make sense for motherboard makers if they build good chipsets that eliminate the need to purchase third-party chips. The benefit for AMD would be that it would have strong integration within its platform, which make for easier motherboard builds and lower build costs. Digitimes also says that the president of ASMedia is also in charge of Asustek’s motherboard purchasing and R&D team, so that wouldn’t be a bad person have on your side.

AMD and ASMedia made headlines last month when it was reported that AMD would be licensing SATA Express (SATAe) technology from ASMedia for their upcoming chipsets. None of AMD’s current chipsets support SATA Express, but it is considered a must-have feature for new platforms.
