HD Tune v4.60 – Random Access

The random access read and write test is a very important performance area to look at on solid state drives and hard drives as some controllers have problems with random writes. In recent years the controllers have improved and the firmware has been better optimized for random read and write performance.

Benchmark Results: When it comes to the random access read performance test, with the Western Caviar Green 2TB and 3TB drives the performance is close, but we have to give the slight edge to the 3TB drive as it was able to do more IOPS at every file transfer size tested.

Benchmark Results: The write performance test results leaned in favor of the WD Caviar Green 2TB, though, as you can see from the screen captures above. The new WD Caviar Green 3TB was only faster in the 1MB file transfer size test when it came to random access write performance across the entire drive.
