HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.
Benchmark Results: The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB Hard Drive was compared to the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB Notebook hard drive in all the tests run. HD Tach 220.127.116.11 found that the average read speed was 67.5MBps on the WD drive, which was much faster than the 54.6MBps observed on the Seagate 7200 RPM drive. The random access time of the WD drive was 16.5ms, which was a little slower than the 14.7ms seen on the Seagate drive. The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB Hard Drive had a burst speed of 237.2MBps and an average write speed of 63.2MBps. It looks like the WD Scorpio Blue 500GB Hard Drive is off to a great start as this 5400 RPM drive is performing faster than the 7200 RPM Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB Notebook hard drive!
