Researchers from the University at Buffalo are working on developing a deep-sea computing network to improve how we conduct surveillance and detect weather anomalies such as tsunamis. As we know there are wireless networks all across the world but these signals don’t penetrate the water for under sea use. All of that is about to change however with technological advancements made by University professors and students have been successful in transmitting data from underwater sensor networks to laptops and other wireless devices on the water’s surface. Deep-sea internet has many applications both scientific and in many areas of defense. Read more about how the University at Buffalo is taking the internet underwater here. It looks like it’s only a matter of time before someone is successful in playing “Words with Friends” while scuba diving.
“A submerged wireless network will give us an unprecedented ability to collect and analyze data from our oceans in real time,” said Tommaso Melodia, UB associate professor of electrical engineering and the project’s lead researcher. “Making this information available to anyone with a smartphone or computer, especially when a tsunami or other type of disaster occurs, could help save lives.”
