Snap May Have a Drone up its Sleeves

Snap is the parent company of Snapchat and it has been working of late to get people behind the firm’s IPO set to happen in the coming days. That IPO gives the company a value of somewhere over $20 billion and it only remains to be seen if people buy shares. Snapchat may be what Snap is most known for, but the company has some other plans for itself in the hardware realm.

Recently the company has shown off its Spectacles, which look like sunglasses with camera lenses fitted to them with the idea of making it easier to feed images and video to the Snapchat app. Those Spectacles aren’t all that Snap is working on. People who claim to be familiar with what is going on at Snap say that the company has also worked on a drone.

Three different people told the NYT that the project was in the works. Presumably the drone could be used to take video and photos from an overhead perspective and then send that content to the Snapchat app that is the meat and potatoes of what Snap has to offer.

It’s far from clear at this time if the drone will ever come to market as a real product, Snap is known for working on things that never see the light of day or morph into other products. Snap has made no official comment on the drone. Snap says that each day the average user of its app opens the app more than 18 times per day and that over 2.5 billion messages and images are sent daily. New ways to capture video and images for the app aim to increase those numbers.
