Samsung’s Cinema Screen Wants to Replace the Movie Theater Projector

By

For as long as we all remember when you go to the theater to watch a movie on the big screen, that movie is projected with a projector onto the screen. That means a bright beam of light spearing through the dark theater. Samsung Electronics wants to change all that with its new Samsung Cinema Screen.

Rather than using a projector to throw the giant images, this 34-foot wide screen is the world’s first High Dynamic Range LED theater display. Samsung promises the best image quality ever seen in the theater and higher vibrancy and accuracy than standard theater projectors offer. This new theater tech will be shown off at the Cinemark Century Orleans 18 and XD theater inside The Orleans Hotel & Casino alongside the CinemaCon 2017 conferences.

Samsung says that the massive 34-foot screen accommodates modern theater dimensions and has a resolution of 4096 x 2160 exceeding the DCI specifications used for uniform performance and reliability in digital cinema today. The massive screen has direct-lit LED technology for true HDR and a peak brightness level ten times greater that what is offered with standard cinema projectors.

Samsung boasts about superior color presentation, ultra-contrast, and low tone grayscale settings for brighter colors and deepest blacks with a contrast ratio at near infinity:1. The screen will be matched with an audio solution powered by Harman Professional Solutions and Samsung’s Audio Lab. There is no word on pricing for the screen, but it will be very expensive since it is a commercial cinema display.
