RRAM to be the NAND killer?

By

If you were offered a flash drive that could read and write 1000 times faster than any existing flash technology, would you take it? According to the Nikkei Business Daily, Sharp and Shizuoka University have co-developed a new technology that can be fabbed on old technology, all the while being cheaper and faster than existing NAND tech. Good news? You bet it is. The article however, still does not mention if this new technology will share NAND’s shortcoming of having a finite write cycle, or lifespan if you will. If the new technology does not, it may have big implications for the hard drive market in the long run.

Sharp, in cooperation with scientists at Shizuoka University has already built a prototype but it’s unclear when we’ll see these fab products in the wild.

If, as we suspect, the patents are written and pending, there will be plenty of memory manufacturers wondering what their future might be.
