The PC Benchmarking Test System

Before we look at the Rise of the Tomb Raider performance numbers, let’s take a brief look at the test system that was used. All testing was done using a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and benchmarks were completed on the desktop with no other software programs running.  There has been some concern of people testing a cold card versus a hot card, but we’ve always done out testing ‘hot’ since the site started back more than a decade ago.

Video Cards & Drivers used for testing:

  • AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.1.1
  • NVIDIA GeForce 361.82

test system

Intel X79/LGA2011 Platform

The Intel X79 platform that we used to test the all of the video cards was running the ASUS P9X79-E WS motherboard with BIOS 1704 that came out on 05/08/2015. We went with the Intel Core i7-4960X Ivy Bridge-E processor to power this platform as it is PCIe 3.0 certified, so all graphics cards are tested with PCI Express Gen 3 enabled. The Kingston HyperX 10th Anniversary 16GB 2400MHz quad channel memory kit was set to XMP Profile #2. This profile defaults to 2133MHz with 1.65v and 11-13-13-30 2T memory timings. The OCZ Vertex 460 240GB SSD was run with latest firmware available. A Corsair AX860i digital power supply provides clean power to the system and is also silent as the fan hardly ever spins up. This is critical to our testing as it lowers the ambient noise level of the room and gives us more accurate sound measurements.

My 980Ti dominated this game at 1080p but they are pure idiots for thinking a 980Ti or even a Titan X can handle it at 1440p or above. Sure they can run the game but with most if not all settings on medium or low which kills the gaming experience. It is better to play at 1080p, 60FPS, with ALL MAXED OUT instead of playing at 1440p-30-40FPS, with most settings on low.

  • Justin Zerbel

I’m Running A GTX 670 Top Edition From Asus Along with 8GB of DDR3-1600Mhz Ram along with a Intel Core I3-4360 and I run the Game Maxed out at 1080P. I usually game at 1440p because of Anti Aliasing but i decided since my GPU is getting a little tired of all the new games i thought i would make it easier and run it at 1080P lol. With DX12 Enabled and FXaa along with maxed out settings i’m getting around 35 to 50FPS with Flucuations because of V-ram or My Cpu limitation one of the two lol. You Don’t need a shitty 970 To Max this game out. My 670 only Has a 2GB Framebuffer but can handle 3GB’s max without stuttering. I’m guessing since my FPs Flucuates and stutters occasionally that i’m maxing my V-ram like a whore in church but it’s better than the Xbox one garbage

    • Vulcanproject

It must run like crap, because a GTX960 can’t do maxed and a locked 30FPS on this @ 1080p, and that card utterly destroys any GTX670.

      But keep on talking nonsense.

      • Justin Zerbel

I refuse to get into hardware wars. I run the game maxed out but only with FXAA and i get around 35 to 40Fps with dips to around 23 or 24 when the scene gets really really intense.

      • Justin Zerbel

Also for clarification i don’t have the original 670 I have the Top Edition 670 From Asus and no overclocks. It mostly depends on the CPU you have. Most Games now days rely a little bit more CPU Side than GPU. Just Look At GTA V that game struggles with low end CPU’s

        • Vulcanproject

Irrelevant this is a heavily GPU bound game. GTX670 OC version or not, is not enough for ultra and 1080 on this game. You can play it choppy as you like but at least the Xbone version is locked to 30FPS.

Even a GTX770 with a kickass CPU struggles at those settings and that card stock beats every GTX670.

Most people who game on PC want nice tidy framerates all the time, not massive dips to 20FPS when it gets hectic

        • Justin Zerbel

Lol 23 Fps and only when a lot of crap is happening. You know you are kind of a ass. Their is absolutely no reason for you to jump down on my throat. I have been enjoying myself while playing the game and you should be to. Stop stressing over what people have in their rigs. Just play the damn game and have fun.

        • Vulcanproject

I’m not stressing out about your system, I am disliking what you have said because you are giving out misinformation to people. But luckily anyone can go and see other benchmarks and know that GPU is totally inadequate for the settings you claim. I suggest they do!

        • someone

My PC has MSI GTX 670 Power Edition and it doesen’t run in maxed out settings.

  • Damian

With all the honesty, after 5 hours of gameplay, this is a bad port. All the praise comes from Nvidia 980 Owners, and still they get low fps.
As for the rest of us, the FPS is horrid in the open locations, getting to the point where the game is unplayable.

Really bad port, unless you don’t mind low FPS

    • Javed Alam

my framerate is great on very high – r9 fury

      • Damian

Fury is equivalent to 980 so yeah, not so surprising. like I said, I am getting 100fps in smaller location, which is great, then it goes down to 40fps in open world, and stutters. r9 390

        • Nathan Kirsch

What parts of the game are stuttering on you? Let me know what maps and I’ll go try to replicate.

        • Damian

Soviet installment when it is snowing and it is windy.

        • Justin Zerbel

Brother I Gotta ask.. Do you Prefer Nvidia or AMD. I see you have the 390 which is not that much cheaper than the Nvidia Alternative. Do you prefer the 390 over lets say a 980 TI? And would you Recommend The 390? I have the 670 and i do plan to upgrade and have been looking at switching to amd for a little while

        • Damian

I do prefer AMD, but it would be nice to have the gAmes optimized right alway for AMD. At the end of the day, I don’t care and I would choose the better card for the better price, and I think AMD is that Card that pushed the competition.

  • Bassblaster505

1080p? no? oh thats right i forgot everyone has a 1440p or 4K monitor

    • Nathan Kirsch

I was testing higher-end cards and figured that for the six $275+ cards that most of those folks would be gaming at 1440p and 4K!

      • Sean Easterling

As a Fury X owner and 1080p player, I respectfully disagree.

In these sad days of horrid console ports + Gameworks gimping, the only way to be sure you get your desired level of performance is to bring far more horsepower than theoretically should be required for your desired res + framerate.

        • Nathan Kirsch

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll start going back on all 6 cards and re-testing them at 1080P!

        • Nathanael Freihart

          That is truly honrable behavior.

        • Sean Kumar Sinha

          Nate, you work too hard.

        • Nathan Kirsch

It’s all good! I’m doing all the cards at 1080P for 5 game titles (Tome Raider, Fallout 4, Battlefied 4, GTAV and Star Wars Battlefront), so it’s 5 games x 6 video cards x 3 runs each… Only 90 benchmark runs. The four FRAPS runs are 120 seconds each, so three hours of solid benchmarking and by the time i mod the ini files, reinstall drivers and all that it’s about 5-6 hours of work total.

        • Damian

Agreed, I fluctuate between 30-100 fps depending on the location. R9 390 seems to have power to pull 60fps easily, but rise of the tomb raider tries to render entire environment at once, hence fps goes to 30

    • Justin Zerbel

Lol I have a 3D 1080P LG out in my living room and a 32 Sony 720P tv for my Computer usage which i overclocked from 60hz to 120hz and also set a few custom resolutions passed 1080p and straight to 3840×2160. This game is brutal though even a 1080P. My Goodness
