PS4 Nabs Top Spot in NPD’s Best Selling Hardware Rankings for May

The latest sales ranking charts from NPD have been published, and Sony has taken the top spot for hardware sales back from Nintendo. For May 2017, the Sony PS4 was the best selling game hardware platform. The previous month, the top selling console had been the Nintendo Switch.

The Switch has been very hard to find with widespread shortages persisting since the launch of the console. If there was enough stock to meet the demand for the Switch, I’d wager the numbers would look very different for May.

NPD also noted that the combined installed base for the PS4 and Xbox One has beat the previous generation by 29%. NPD gave data on the best selling video games for the month of May reports IGN. The top selling game title for the month of May was Injustice 2 with the second spot taken by Mario Kart 8.

Third place went to a really old title, GTA V and fourth place was another Switch title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Prey 2017 was in fifth place followed by Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia, NBA 2K17, MLB 17: The Show, and Overwatch.

It’s worth noting that the NPD numbers for Mario Kart 8, Breath of the Wild, Prey, Fire Emblem, and Overwatch left out digital sales figures. NPD also noted that software sales dollars fell 20% for May compared to the previous year due to the launch of DOOM and Uncharted 4 in May 2016.
