Diamond UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

Earlier this month Diamond Multimedia launched the UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and we got our hands on a unit for testing. It might sound strange to some that companies are coming out with wired 1Gbps network adapters, but they come in handy when you need to get online and a wireless network is not available or down. Many of the Intel Ultrabooks that have been released in recent years do not have a standard RJ45 port due to how thin the new form factors have become. Some companies include a USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet Adapter that operates at 10/100M speeds, but that is painfully slow. There is no worse feeling when you leave for an international vacation and you arrive to a hotel only to learn that the wireless doesn't reach your room and you don't have your USB adapter!  When you spend $750 or more on a PC or Mac, you want to make sure you are getting the most from the network and that is where a USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter comes in.

Diamond Multimedia USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet LAN Adapter UE3000

The Diamond Multimedia UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter costs $29.99 shipped. Diamond Multimedia UE3000 Features:

Diamond Multimedia UE3000 Bundle

Inside the Diamond Multimedia UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter packaging you'll find the quick start guide, driver disc (contains the UE3000 user's manual) and the USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter itself. This is pretty much all you'll need and to be honest we didn't even need the quick start guide or the driver disc. We just plugged in the Diamond UE3000 into a free SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port on our ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A Ultrabook that was running Windows 8.1 and the latest driver was automatically installed.

The Diamond UE3000 USB3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter uses the ASIX AX88179 Chipset and supports all USB 3.0 power saving modes (U0, U1, U2, and U3) as well as IEEE 802.3az (Energy Efficient Ethernet). When it comes to power consumption, the UE3000 uses 38 mA in suspend mode and 420 mA in operating mode. The adapter measures 2.5 x 1.0 x 0.6 inches and weighs just 46 grams, so it is also small and easily portable for those on the go.

Diamond UE3000

Notice that the Diamond UE3000 had a pair of LED status lights. This is nice as most USB adapters don't have this. If the 'Status' LED is green it means you are good and it will blink when there is LAN activity (when data is being transferred on the Ethernet network to host system). The other LED is the 'Link' LED and it will be amber when you are connected to a Gigabit 1000Mbps network or it will be off when connected to a 10/100M network.

The Diamond UE3000 is a simple device that does one common thing, so let's cut the chit-chat and get straight to benchmarking on a Gigabit network!

Test System

We wanted to test the Diamond SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter in a real world setup, so we connected it to our ASUS Zenbook Prime Ultrabook that is running Windows 8.1 64-bit  To test the wired performance we used the Alienware M17x R4 gaming laptop that was directly connected to the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit 802.11ac Router. The Alienware M17x R4 features an Intel i7-3610QM CPU with 6GB RAM running Windows 7 64-Bit, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M video card.

We used the Aleinware laptop to run LAN Speed Server and then ran LAN Speed Test on the Ultrabook system with the USB NIC adapter to test throughput. We left the router in default mode, which means that the router was left in “Unsecure Mode” (for fastest data throughput), and with WMM / QoS turned ON. After connecting, we ran the PC application LAN Speed Test (LST) to measure file transfer and network speeds using both 1MB and 100MB packet sizes. LST builds a file in memory and then transfers the packet without the effects of windows file caching.  It then reports the time and calculates the network speed. We used 6-foot long CAT6 cables for the RJ45 runs.

We will be comparing the new Diamond Multimedia UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit network adapter to the 'free' ASUS 10/100M USB 2.0 network adapter that came with the ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A Ultrabook. This should show you how much your network speeds can improve by moving up to a Gigabit controller and the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface.

The ASUS USB 2.0 10/100M Ethernet Adapter uses the AX88772B controller from ASIX Electronics Corporation. This is a low-power USB 2.0 to 10/100M Fast Ethernet Controller.

asix-usb3

Diamond Multimedia also uses a controller from ASIX Electronics Corporation, but it is the newer AX88179 USB3.0 to 10/100/1000M Gigabit Ethernet Controller. The AX88179 is the world's first USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet controller which integrates USB 3.0 PHY and 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet MAC/PHY in a single chip.

Diamond Multimedia UE3000 USB 3.0 10/100/1000 Gigabit Network Adapter:

diamond-1mb

Benchmark Results: When transferring 1MB packets the ASUS USB 2.0 10/100M adapter that came with the ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A averaged 78Mbps read and 93Mbps write, which is obviously slow. The Diamond Multimedia USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000M Gigabit Ethernet LAN Network Adapter (UE3000) averaged 664Mbps read and 687Mbps write. This is a night and day difference in performance and it is something you notice right away on a LAN when transferring files from one PC to another.

100MB Packet Performance

ASUS USB 2.0 10/100M Network Adapter:

asus-100mb

Diamond Multimedia UE3000 USB 3.0 10/100/1000 Gigabit Network Adapter:

diamond-100mb

Benchmark Results: The results didn't change much with 100MB packets as the Diamond Multimedia UE3000 performed much better than the 10/100M USB 2.0 network adapter that came with the ASUS Zenbook Prime Ultrabook. The ASUS USB 2.0 10/100 adapter averaged 77Mbps read and 93Mbps write, which gets you on the network and that is about it. The Diamond Multimedia USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Network Adapter (UE3000) averaged 642Mbps read and 757Mbps write. This is nearly a 9x improvement on the read speed and an 8x improvement on the write speeds! This is a huge performance gain and was had for just $29.99 shipped.

Final Thoughts and Conclusions

Diamond Multimedia USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet LAN Adapter UE3000

The Diamond UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet adapter is simple to use thanks to being plug-and-play compatible and quickly gets you up and running on a Gigabit network. superspeedusb_logo

Our performance testing showed that we were able to average 642Mbps read and 757Mbps write with the Diamond UE3000 on our particular test setup. The USB 2.0 10/100M network adapter that we've been using for the past year could only averaged 77Mbps read and 93Mbps write, so this is a major performance improvement. We can only hope that if a mobile device doesn't come with an integrated Ethernet port (RJ-45 connector) that a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter will be included in the near future. If not, have no fear as the Diamond UE3000 is now available for purchase.

One of the best things about the Diamond UE3000 is that it costs just $29.99 shipped. If you move around a ton of data on a network, the improved speeds will save you a ton of time and make the cost justifiable. The Diamond UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter is also backed by a 1-year limited warranty should anything go wrong.

We most certainly recommend the Diamond UE3000 as it performed great and vastly improved our user experience on the devices we tried it out on. This would also be ideal to have in in your toolbox or IT department as if a Gigabit NIC ever fails on a board you can quickly plug this adapter in and have the client PC back up and running on a Gigabit network in minutes.
