NVIDIA Now Putting Desktop GeForce GTX 980 GPUs into Gaming Notebooks!

By

Up until now, the fastest mobile GPU that you can find in any gaming notebook was the NVIDA GeForce GTX 980M. As great as the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M is, it needs to be thermally-throttled due to being in a notebook and that means a GeForce GTX 980M is up to 40% slower than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 desktop graphics card. By placing a fully enabled GM204 Maxwell GPU into a gaming laptop the folks over at NVIDIA have been able to do a number of things never seen before on notebooks with regards to specifications. We are talking about having 7 Gbps GDDR5 memory, 4-8 phase power supplies, an unlocked GPU with overclocking headroom and end user fan control. NVIDIA is so happy with the results that they claimed for the first time that extreme desktop gaming without any compromises has come to notebooks. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 GPU being used in notebooks will have 2,048 CUDA cores, up to 8 GB of 7000 MHz (effective) GDDR5 memory, and an 1126 MHz core clock.

NVIDIA let us know that companies like ASUS and MSI will be coming out with gaming laptops that feature this GPU. We spoke with ASUS today and they confirmed that the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 will be available on the ASUS ROG GX700 gaming notebook. The ASUS ROG GX700 is a 17-inch gaming laptop that sports a gorgeous 4K IPS display, Intel 6th Gen Core ‘Skylake’ processor and just happens to be the first gaming laptop to benefit from water-cooling. ASUS wasn’t sure about the specific details of the cooling system for the GPU and hasn’t released pricing details for the this model yet that just debuted at IFA 2015. A fully configured ASUS ROG G751 gaming laptop will set you back $3,000 and this will be higher than that, so start saving!
